Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy(Ceol agus Foinn) RTE Radio na Gaeltachta April 2008 release of the first cd of the music and songs associated with the Willie Clancy Summer School. The Summer School started in 1973 and Radio na Gaeltachta first aired in 1972.This was a cause of great pride to Willie himself that they had at last a radio station of their own. The connection continued healthily over the years culminating in the launch of this double cd.
| Bobby Casey November 2007 release of the fiddling of West Clare legend, Bobby Casey. All the tracks on this album were recorded by Reg Hall and Bill Leader in Camden Town,London in 1966,1967 and 1971. Bobby played the London pub scene with such musical luminaries as East Galway fiddler,Martin Byrnes, fellow Clare musicians,Tommy McCarthy ,Willie Clancy and Paddy Breen. In the liner notes,Reg Hall describes Bobby's"lonesome fiddling" as "reeking of rural Ireland".This music gave solace to many the Irish immigrant who settled in north London at that time and indeed ensured the continued good health of traditional Irish music into the future.
| Dympna O' Sullivan Launched on 8th Nov. 2007 at the Ennis November Trad Fest, Dympna's first release is an album of the most beautiful ,rhythmic concertina music. She is probably one of the most self-deprecating musicians I have ever met and the limelight sits heavily on her shoulders but she plays with the most perfect assurance and her music is indeed a treasure. Definitely, Mrs. Crotty's re-incarnation.
| Matt Molloy,John Carty and Arty McGlynn December 2007 launch of flute, fiddle and guitar music from three masters of traditional Irish music. No advice but to buy it quickly .
| Martin Hayes Dennis Cahill It's been over 8 years since "Live in Seattle" so February 2008 brings the release of Martin's 5th album(Dennis' fourth with Martin). It's music which enthrals, spellbinds, pacifies - at the risk of overheating, there are so many positives in this combination that the only advice is go get it quickly and savour it.
| Conal O Grada July 2008 release of flute player,Conal O Grada's second album. 1990 saw the release of "Top of the Coom" so The Willie Clancy Summer School launch was long awaited and it was received with much acclaim.
| Frank Brunel and Vincent Rosinach July 2008 release of fiddle and flute music played with a beautiful blend of simple empathy. Frank's friendship with Paddy Fahy, the great East Galway composer,is apparent here with the number of Paddy's tunes and if only the cd is bought with these in mind,it'll be a very worthwhile purchase.
| Ben Lennon and Tony O' Connell July 2008 release of fiddle and concertina music by Leitrim fiddler, Ben Lennon and Limerick concertina player,Tony O' Connell. Nearly fifty years seperates the two but the Sligo/Leitrim and the Limerick/Clare tunes blend beautifully to form a release of exquisite quality.
| John Blake,Lamond Gillespie and Mick Leahy May 2008 release of the follow-up recording to the top selling album "Traditional Irish Music From London". As lifting and forceful as the original and well worth the wait.
| Kate McNamara Nearly 8 years ago,I visited the McNamara house with a Wheatstone concertina for sale.An early-teen girl approached, took the concertina and proceeded to weave the most beautiful, magical, enveloping music. I departed without the concertina but with her soulful tones indelibly etched in my memory. Kate's June 2008 release of her debut album marks her maiden voyage into the world of recording and without doubt, there will be a long, musical odessey ahead of her. As well as other guest musicians, she is joined by her fiddler sister,Amy and whistler brother,Gearoid. A fully recommended buy!
